Commissioning a Portrait

Arranging a Meeting

If you live in or near Toronto, a meeting with you and your pet is the ideal way to gather reference material such as photos and initial sketches. There is no charge for this meeting but there may be travel expenses depending on distance.

Animals, (especially cats!) are usually more comfortable in their own environment, and it will lend itself to getting a good set of photos.
Horses may be photographed at your home barn, or at a horse show setting. There may be some travel expenses depending on the distance from central Toronto.

In the case of a long distance, you can send high quality digital and/or hard copy photos. They should be clear, in focus and printed photos should be no smaller than 5” x 7”.

How to Photograph Your Pet

The quality of the photos is important. Lighting is of primary concern, so that as many details as possible can be captured. A bright overcast day is the best condition in which to take reference photos. It minimizes harsh, distracting shadows. Natural light is preferred over indoor flash. The full body should be shown from several angles, front, side and three-quarters. Also close up of the head would be very useful. Photos should be done from pets’ eye level. You may already have a favorite photo that you would like used as a reference.

If your pet is no longer with you, it will be necessary to use any available photographs. I have done a number of paintings of deceased pets and horses with very good results.
